Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life by Laurie Wallmark and Katy Wu

The STEAM picture book parade continue with…

Are you capable of way more than you appear to be?

The Picture Book of the Week is Hey Lamarr’s Double Life: Hollywood Legend and Brilliant Inventor, written by Laurie Wallmark and illustrated by Katy Wu.

About the Book:

Hedy Lamarr is most famous for being a beautiful Hollywood actress. Many thought that because she was so pretty, she couldn’t possibly be smart. Hedy had to fight that stereotype all of her life, but she didn’t let that stop her. She set up an invention room in her house with all the tools she would need to create new and exciting gadgets and gizmos. She invented a new traffic signal, a way to find lost pets, and a flavor cube that turned water into soda. Her biggest invention, however, was one that would change all of our lives.

Writing Exercise:

Most people thought that because Hedy was pretty, she couldn’t be smart. Think about a time someone told you couldn’t do something. Draw a picture of what you wanted to do and write about it.
