Everyone’s Awake by Colin Meloy and Shawn Harris

Have you and your family ever stayed up all night long? What did you do? Read a book? Tell scary stories? Skateboard up the walls?

The Picture Book of the Week is Everyone’s Awake, written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Shawn Harris.

About the Book:

What would you do if you opened your eyes in the middle of the night and everyone in you family was wide awake and accomplishing fantastical things like trapezing from the ceiling fans, or winning a Pulitzer, or baking bread, or playing whist with a dead relative’s ghost. That is what happens in this story about a boy who wakes up to the unexpected. When the Sun starts to come up, he tiptoes down the stairs. What will he find. Something else unexpected maybe. Or will he join in?

Writing Exercise:

The writing exercise for the week it to write a story about unusual things you do when you stay up all night. Or if you aren’t allowed to stay up all night, write about all the weird and wonderful things you would do if you could stay up all night. Be as fantastical as you want: roam in between the walls hunting bats, start a spider weaving competition. Whatever strikes your fancy.

I would love to hear your stories. If you are willing to share, send to stories@alicia-salazar.com.

Happy Writing!
