Not all heroes lead from the front. Sometimes it’s the sidekick—the loyal, clever, kind-hearted friend—who keeps the mission moving forward. In kids’ stories (and real life), sidekicks quietly model powerful leadership.
Sidekicks are often the encouragers, problem-solvers, and quiety thinkers. They might not seek the spotlight, but they help others shine. Think of Ron Weasley, Samwise Gamgee, or even Camila’s friends.
Leadership skills they model:
- Loyalty – they stand by their friends even in tough moments
- Problem-Solving – they notice details others miss
- Support – they help the team move forward without needing all the credit
- Empathy – they listen, notice, and respond with kindness
- Courage – they act even when they are afraid
When kids identify with the sidekick, they learn that leadership doesn’t always mean being loud or first. It can mean being brave enough to help, speak up, or stay calm when others can’t.
Want to help kids explore these leadership traits? Try a writing prompt like: “What does your sidekick do when the main character wants to give up?” You’ll be surprised by how many small heroes emerge from the sidelines.
